Introdoction of Rotary Clubs in China
Rotary has had a long history with China. The first Rotary Club in Shanghai was chartered in 1919. Changes in the political climate resulted in the closure of all 23 Rotary clubs on mainland China by 1953. In March 1997, after many meetings between Rotary and Chinese government officials, the Board agreed to open the People's Republic of China for Rotary extension on 1 July 1997 in recognition of Hong Kong Rotary clubs joining the People's Republic of China.
The Chinese government is currently developing policies and criteria for humanitarian organization operations in China. Respecting the government's regulations, Rotary is also closely monitoring the provisional clubs to help them become effective clubs.
